And given that many people around you probably don\u2019t either, it\u2019s likely your first reaction when someone brings up a steel mill is something along these lines: Wait\u2026what? They make steel in a mill\u2026like ore and stuff gets turned into steel and then there are big machines\u2026uh huh\u2026okay, right. Then what? So they make cars out of them and stuff like that? The answer is no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Raw_Materials_Energy_Costs_Labor_Cost\"><\/span><strong>Raw Materials, Energy Costs &amp; Labor Cost<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like any industry, steel manufacturing has to deal with the rising costs of raw materials and energy. Low-quality iron ore is plentiful in China, so why does it cost more for Chinese steelmakers to produce a ton of steel than their European counterparts? In part, it\u2019s because China uses more fuel (and therefore more energy) to get a ton of steel from ore to finished product than producers in Europe do. But it also has something to do with labor costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a recent report by McKinsey &amp; Company, Chinese steelmakers pay about $1 per hour for an unskilled laborer\u2014less than half what their European competitors pay. That difference adds up when you consider that China\u2019s 1 million steelworkers make about 4 billion tons of steel every year\u2014twice as much as all of Europe combined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while wages are on the rise in China, they remain lower than those paid by competitors around the world. These factors taken together mean that overall costs run much higher than they do for other businesses. On top of that, there is no market-driven commodity price control mechanism that could help stabilize prices at least to some extent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This leaves business owners with few options but to increase their prices significantly in order to maintain profit margins. However, it\u2019s unclear whether consumers will be willing to pay more for steel products as their purchasing power has been greatly reduced over time due to inflation.
